What’s the Story? Collective was an interdisciplinary group of young adults, youth workers and an artist who worked together in Rialto Youth Project, Dublin for three years from 2008-11. Their work was built upon a collection of anonymous stories of power and powerlessness and manifested in a series of reading events, films and a mobile space for creative interaction. In October 2011, their project climaxed with a six week residency and exhibition called ‘Policing Dialogues’ which explored the power relationship between young people and the police through a full programme of workshops, seminars, meetings and dialogues. In 2011, Rialto Youth Project launched , a 24 page newspaper The Policing Dialogues Review giving personal and analytical perspectives on the project and made a public announcement about a training programme developed during the residency which is to be implemented as part of the induction course for future trainee Gardai allocated to the Dublin South Central division.
The Garda training and newspaper launch formally marked the end of What’s the Story? Collective but their methodology has been embedded into the practice of Rialto Youth Project. The artist continues to work with the staff of the youth project developing a follow on project for 2012-15, specifically exploring young women’s experience of power and other former members of the collective are also in the early stages of a project relating to young people and the education system.
